Does the definition of "emerging artist" apply to those who have an extensive body of work but not had recognition?

Definitions of emerging artist on the Web:

Definition of established artist on the Web:
  • An artist who is at a mature stage in his or her career and who has created an extensive body of independent work. An established artist has reached an advanced level of achievement by sustaining a nationally or internationally recognized contribution to the discipline.

  1. I know that it's not very marketable this way, but there are artists that cannot go by either of the categories. Most of the artists in the world, I would say. So, my take on your question is: No, I don't think that artist is either emerging, or established. Try the label genius, or innovative :)

  2. Ironically I reached a problem when I tried to submit to the White Columns registry. Here was the email I received from them upon their finding out that I exhibited at envoy enterprises last month.

    Dear Qi,

Thank you for your interest in the Curated Registry, however due to your relationship with Envoy you are ineligable for inclusion.

Very ironic. I get confused over whether I'm an emerging or established artist. According to my definition, I consider myself an emerging artist since I don't have gallery representation in either New York City or Los Angeles. However, White Columns thinks of me otherwise? I hope that they didn't think that I got repped by envoy because I am not.

It's tough. I do have a private dealer that represents my work online but it's the not the same. Installation and conceptual projects still require a physical space for its execution and communication I think.

    Thanks again, qi peng

  3. "Emerging" is a funny label... is there any other profession that uses it? Emerging Dentist? Emerging Psychiatrist? Emerging Account Executive? I can't think of one - I think artists are due a new buzzword.

  4. an emerging artist is in the early stages of showing work. they may have a few thousand pieces, all ready for some form of exhibition(like me), or a few ideas floating around in their head(like a lot of people). an emerging artist is looking for representation(whether they know it or not) and is showing as the opportunity arises. recognition is difficult to define(and achieve). lots of people have seen my work and i've been in 10 or more shows in past year, but i don't feel recognized. here, recognize me. adamcollison.com

  5. An emerging artist is one with a body of work yet not had or received critical recognition yet. The labels are open to interpretation and are most certainly interpreted differently according to who your asking. the only one which seems to be constant is "established".
